Conference Overview

Virginia Association of School Librarians (VAASL) 2024 Annual Conference

"Telling Our Story"

Keynote Speakers

The VAASL Conference Committee has been hard at working planning and organizing a spectacular 2024 Conference. We have great keynote speakers including Tom Bober, Samira Ahmed, Lisa Yee, and Jason Chin. We have a great vendor hall full of your favorite suppliers ready to show you the latest and greatest wares. We have concurrent sessions coming in that will bring you all sorts of ideas for your school library.

The VAASL Board and Conference Planning Committee have worked hard to maximize the value of your annual conference registration fee. This all-inclusive conference includes an Ice Cream Social, President's Breakfast Reception, and lunch on both Thursday and Friday.

The conference begins on Wednesday afternoon with concurrent sessions and workshops. Wednesday evening, we will highlight our Makerspace activities with an Ice Cream Social, a wonderful chance to reconnect with old friends and network with colleagues. Thursday is a full day of sessions, author keynotes, and vendor treats. We continue with great sessions and speakers until we say goodbye on Friday afternoon.

Don't miss out on this great professional development and networking conference with fellow school librarians and educators.

Special Limited Space Sessions

We have a couple of special, limited space sessions planned to kick off the conference on Wednesday, November 6th.**

The Impact of Primary Sources in the School Library: Process Over Product
A compelling primary source can bring a bit of mystery or a new piece of a puzzle into a library or classroom. Paired with an analysis method, these historical items can piques curiosity, promote collaboration, and elevate engagement. Our Thursday  keynote speaker, school librarian and author, Tom Bober, shares insights on the benefits that primary source analysis brings to student thinking and learning while attendees focus on learning the steps and strategies to unleash them.
One 3-hour session - limited to 35 participants

DEMCO Book Doctor Workshops provide book care training with the aim of helping you keep your collection in circulation longer. Training includes protection and repair techniques and offers a hands-on experience, ideas for protecting books ahead of circulation, and tried-and-true methods for a variety of repairs. Workshops typically cover how to do basic page repairs, tip-ins, hinge and spine repairs, book jacket and laminate applications, and how to reinforce spines. Course notes with links to other free resources such as how-to videos, product directories, and a repair guide will be provided.
Two 1-hour sessions - limited to 40 participants each

**Special sessions will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please do not check that you will attend unless you are definitely interested and plan to be there on Wednesday.
